Compilation time in Q-II

Hello?

I am spending almost 5 hours to complete the compilation of the code in Quartus-II (6.1). In the case of using most of the resources, it it normal to have this kind of long compilation time?

I am using Stratix-II EP2S180F and running Q-II (6.1) in Windows XP (32bit) on Intel(R) Core 2 Cpu 6600 (2.4GHz) with 3.00 GB of RAM. I am wondering whether there is a setting which is very sensitive to the compilation time which I did not carefully check. Any advice would be deeply appreciated. Thank you.

John

    Hi John,

the compilation time depends on a lot of parameters. Maybe it is possible for you to look which part of the flow causes the long runtime. If it is the synthesis or the fitting ( placement and routing) ? Do you have timing requirement which are difficult to achieve ?

In case you have a high devcie utilization, I would expect long runtimes also.

Can you post some more info's here ?

    Kind regards

and also - there are several settings you can change in the configuration, some may shorten the synthesis.

(and also - check whether you added SignalTap that you now don't need - it uses a lot of resources and makes the synthesis slower)

You should also consider upgrading versions of Quartus. From 6.1 to 8.1 and later, Stratix II compiles should be approximately 2x faster on the same computer.
