Honored ContributorGee, it's been so long ago I don't even remember any more (not sure why it takes forever for questions to show up on this forum).
I believe there was a bug in jethro branch of Yocto - one of the recipe files was called bbapend instead of bbappend. https://lists.yoctoproject.org/pipermail/yocto/2015-november/027454.html
