I believe you can use the latest SPL which is the same as U-Boot. But note one thing is that the new SPL is expecting the U-Boot in raw partition (bs=512 seek=2560) instead of FAT filesystem. I am working on the patch to fix FAT enablement in SPL as the size too large to fix 64kB. Coincidentally I managed to grab a Kingston pendrive.
