print hello world without a board

If I don't have a FGPA board, can I still print a "hello world" message to the Nios IDE console? I tried to run the program as a local C/C++ application, but the console just has a message say <termi...

You could create a design and simulate it. The UART communication will be piped out to the Modelsim transcript window.
