print hello world without a board

If I don't have a FGPA board, can I still print a "hello world" message to the Nios IDE console? I tried to run the program as a local C/C++ application, but the console just has a message say <termi...

In older versions of the tools there was an ISS, but that has long since been discontinued. Lauterbach sells a fully functional ISS and other Nios II related debug stuff on their website.
