Linux Workstation

It was suggested that I do kernel/app development on a real Linux workstation. Right now we have Mepis 6.0 and Linspire (Lindows). I noticed that most apps support Red-Hat including Quartus and Nios from Altera. Is there a prefered linux version that I should be using? Is it possible to use Mepis or Lindows?

Thanks,

If you just want to compile uClinux, it should OK to use either.

But if you want to run Quartus and SOPC buidler on Linux, you need to use Redhat RHEL 3.0 or 4.0.

The WBEL4 from whiteboxlinux.org is mostly built from Redhat source, and is a good alternative (it is free download).

You should not try to run Quartus on other Linux distro. It is very difficult, if not impossible. (Unless you are an expert.)
