JTAG USB dropping data when printing to terminal

I've got a system setup to print out ADC samples via a NIOS processor (standard) and JTAG USB. The ADC samples at 48Khz and the samples are streamed to the NIOS processor to be printed through PIO. ...

So it looks like the only solution is to switch to regular USB instead of JTAG USB? I noticed that Terasic provides a demonstration project using the Device USB port on the DE2 board so I'll take a look at that.
