FTPD - login failed

For some reason, I can connect, but not login, to my board running FTPD. I'm using the nios2/uClinux un/pass, just like when I log in through JTAG (I tried root/uClinux too). I get the following:

Connected to 192.168.10.50.
220 Nios2 FTP server (GNU inetutils 1.3.2) ready.
User (192.168.10.50:(none)): nios2
331 Password required for nios2.
Password:
530 Login incorrect.
Login failed.

Has anyone seen this? I'm guessing there's a config file or similar that I need to edit.
