serial to parrellel data conversion

I am using a cyclone 2 dev kit and am converting serial data to write to the onboard sdram, just wondering if there are any megafunctions that might handle a good portion of this? I will probably just use the shift register megafunction to convert the data over to parrellel unless there is something better to use.
