HELP: Sound generation on the DE1 board

Can you help me figure out what I need to generate the 1kHz wave?

It seems I need :

Some I2C interfacing

A case statement of values for the wave.

Not sure what else.

I'm not really sure I understand how it actually generates the sound though.

Any help at all would be good.
