FPGA programming file

I compiled my Cyclone 5 FPGA and a .POF and .SOF file were generated. One of my colleagues compiled this same FPGA and a .JIC file was generated instead.

1) Why was my compile resulted in a .POF and .SOF file, but an earlier compile resulted in a .JIC file?

2) Can we use any one of the .JIC, .POF, or .SOF files to program the FPGA?

3) If only .POF file can be used to program the FPGA, then is there a way to convert the .JIC file to .POF file?

    1) Depends on what settings you have for what the Assembler will generate (Assignments -> Device -> Device & Pin Options or in the main settings under Assembler depending on your target device).

    2) Each file has a different use: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/docs/programmable/683039/24-1/secondary-programming-files-programming.html

    3) .sof is main file for programming in the lab with a direct jtag connection. pof and jic are used with flash memories to program the device immediately on power-up.

    Hi,


    Sstrell is correct. The file generated depending on your setting in the Quartus. All files has different function as per what mention by sstrell.
