What board you are using?
You can use .jic file and USB blaster cable. Go to File-> Convert Programming File. Convert your .sof file to .jic. - Altera_Forum

i design my own board
i use cylcon v 5ceba9f23c8 i programming fpga via jtag (its work but very slowly) after that i convert sof file to jic and start to programming when the programming reach 97% its failed !!! - Altera_Forum

What error message you get when it fails?

i find problem my problem is power
now i fixed but i now another problem when i programm sof file everything is ok but when i programm jic file nothing happend (jic file programm and reach to 100%) (i read Configuration, Design Security, and Remote System Upgrades in Cyclone V" chapter from Cyclone V handbook) - Altera_Forum

yes you can use another brand but not all of them
you should disable id check when you want to programm also you can use microcontroller for programming
