cyclone IV backwards compatible with cyclone III

Hello,

I have a question about cyclone, i am new with FPGA. Is the Cyclone IV backwardscompatible with cyclone III and II. I need to make choise between two development boards. If the cyclone IV is not unnecessary I want to use cyclone III.

Thank!,

sincerely,

In what way do you needs backwards compatability? They wont be pin compatible because of different packages. But unless you have specifically instantiated Cyclone 3 elemements in your code (which most people wont be doing) the code should port across the two chips as easily as just changing the device type (and pin allocations) in a quartus project. No source code changes needed.

    Thanks for answering!

I want to order an Altera NIK development kit and this is with cyclone IV. This has al the features i need. But the FPGA IV is very exspencive and i dont need the a high speed FPGA. For testing the board is ideal. But if i want to create a own prototype, i maybe want to use a cyclone III. because it's cheaper. This is the reason for my question.

Cyclone IV should be less expensive than a comparable Cyclone III. Maybe you got the price for a EP4CGX version. These parts are more expensive than a comparable Cylcone III device. You should check the EP4CE devices.
