cyclone 3 fpga current rating

Hi,

I am designing power module for cyclone 3 fpga(EP3C40F484)

In that I need to know ICCint(core current for core voltage of 1.2 v).

when i use webench power architect.it shows 4.7A. i think it is much higher then the required.can i use 1.2v at 3A regulator.any idea :) Thanks in Advance.

Regards,

Shahul

I wonder, how webbench power architect can answer the question of your design's core current consumption? It can't know about. The device manual tells:

    --- Quote Start ---

Altera offers two ways to estimate power for a design: the Excel-based Early Power Estimator and the Quartus II PowerPlay Power Analyzer feature.

    --- Quote End ---

Except for a small idle current, the core current is only dependant on logic activity: number of switching logic cells times core frequency. Most designs have a moderate core current consumption, because only a small number of logic cells is permanently switching.

    Hi FVM,

i have Excel-based Early Power Estimator tool. i don't know how to give data to it. please give me some idea about it.

i also have its user manual but i am not clear with its information.

    Hi Shahul,

Even I am required to find instantaneous current(power) consumption of an altera UP3 board. Did you get any clues regarding this?

    Thanks,
