Win7 unable to do "Auto Detect" for DE0-nano board

I'm using a DE0-nano-SoC board and Quartus on my Win7 computer at work. However, I cannot get the Quartus Programmer software to detect the usb-board connection. I've got the development board plugged in using the micro USB connection on the side of the board between the Ethernet cube and the mini USB. No power cord, no other connections.

The board shows up in my Device Manager as a USB Serial Converter but that's it. Quartus' Programmer software has the "Auto Detect Hardware" button grayed out. What am I supposed to do? I've tried reinstalling the driver several times. This happened at home too, where I used to be able to get it to work a year ago.

    Turn on the board and check (connect power cord).

    Yeah, you need the power cord. Also, make sure you are plugged into the right USB port on the DE0-nano. Sounds like you want to program the FPGA so you would need to use J13 which is on the same side as the power connection.
