What function of Sram in CY3 starter board?

Does the SSRAM in CY3 starter board use to download programm to configure FPGA and nios cpu?

If I remove it and only leave the flash and SDRAM in my system, does the system can work normally?

    The SRAM is typically not used for this function, the flash memory stores the program code which is downloaded at power-up.
