Are you referring the LXDE with a newer kernel version that is similar to the Ubuntu18?

Yes you are right the support for the LXDE image have been dropped. 

However you could still continue using the console image without a GUI like the LXDE image.

There are steps to build the rootfs for the console image in the link below:
