I'm using Quartus/Nios 9.0 and know it works...

I too had some trouble with hangs in select() calls, and had to change a define in ipport.h. Have a look at this message (http://www.alteraforum.com/forum/showpost.php?p=76102&postcount=5).

I'm not sure this "cure" works with 9.1 though...
