LCD use MAX II dev kit

I am beginner. I have a DK-MAXII-1270N.

Objective: write/design a counter using Verilog and send the counter's output to the LCD display.

Questions: How to display the output on the LCD? How to use the LCD/LCD controller?

I noticed there is a LCDController reference design included in the Kit but I don't know to how to use it in my design, if it is applicable here. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Any Verilog sample design available? Thanks.
