I also new to FPGA & CPLD but maybe I can help you... CPLD and FPGA is similar, I think you better start in FPGA rather than CPLD. The price for the development kit is not too far, you can get Terasic DE0 with Cyclone III FPGA for only $79 for Academic purpose, www.terasic.com (http://www.terasic.com). Beside, FPGA has larger capacity rather than CPLD, the Cyclone II in DE0 has 16K of logic block, while MAX II maximum only 2K. So you can build greater application in the future for your project or learning. And also FPGA has better performance and less delay rather than CPLD. Hope I can help you... :) :)
