Communicate board and PC without using Nios?

Hi, I'm trying to realize a communication between DE1 board and PC, can I do it without using Nios?

I used the Control panel application in the starter dev kits, so I think there must be way to realize my thought.But I cannot figure out how to do it.Can some one give a clue or points me to some useful tutorials or documents?what I found are all nonsense......
