Hi Tjani,
the UP1 came with a book: Dueck, Robert K.: Digital Design with CPLD Applications and VHDL; Delmar; 2001; 978-0-7668-1531-5 and a CD 978-0-7668-1160-3 MAX+ PLUS II 9.23. You need a licence file - might be a problem. The software supports a parallel port adapter cable, which you will have to manufacture yourself (ByteBlaster); see Altera web site.
