Honored ContributorHello, I'm also developing a project with the DE1 board and the 5 Mega Pixel Terasic Camera. I'm developing edge detection. You can download the code for this camera and see how it works.

There is a block diagram to help you understand the code in the user manual of the camera. I'm still trying to understand it.
