Problem came back, and deleting all of the various intermediate files is no longer showing any improvement in the situation. Its odd because designs which compiled before now fail with this message.

Error (293007): Current module quartus_fit ended unexpectedly

Should I interpret this result to indicate the the design doesn't fit?

Is there any way to further diagnose the situation?
