Quartus II: no .sof or output file generated

It's quite likely to be a licensing issue. You should see a warning message in Quartus' system console window (or on your console if running that way) indicating that's the case - assuming that is the case. Something along the lines of 'warning: can't generate programming files because you are currently using the quartus ii software in evaluation mode'
