Quartus II 4.0 - Start Complilation Disabled

Have you created a project, or just opened the VHDL files?

You need a project to be able to compile.

BTW: if thats the code that came with the book (johns.vhd) - I would ditch that book and find one that uses much better code examples (the code is quite poor).
