Quartus 18 couldn't complete fitter with Ryzen 3990X

Hi

I have a workstation using Ryzen 3970X Thread-ripper processor. I have no problem complete running the whole implementation from Synthesis to Fitter with Quartus 18.0.1.

However, after the workstation spoiled and was replaced with Ryzen 3990X, Quartus hang at the following info message

"Fitter is using advance physical optimization"

I tried the followings:

1) switch to using only 1 processor

2) turn off advance fitter option

3) set all synthesis and implementations to default values.

All these did not work.

I than disabled the Symetric Multithreading (SMT) option in my BIOS and it could than complete Fitter. However, this causes my system to become quite unresponsive.

Are there any other ways I can get my Fitter to work without disabling the SMT?

Does that mean that some of Ryzen CPU is incompatible with Intel Quartus tools?

regards

Johnny

    Hi,

Advanced Physical Optimization is the global placement engine (it is a required part of the compilation flow for all Quartus Prime Pro Edition families).

Check this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simultaneous_multithreading under Disadvantages section:

Depending on the design and architecture of the processor, simultaneous multithreading can decrease performance if any of the shared resources are bottlenecks for performance.

Seems like Quartus needs more cores to compile. Try use 16 for Maximum processor allowed. If still can't be resolved, then probably have to disabled the Symetric Multithreading (SMT) option.

    Thanks,

    Best regards,

    Sheng

      Hi ShengN

I have tried different processor configuration from 1 to 16 to all. They dont seems to work.

Only disabling the SMT work so far.

I am just no sure if i need to purchase Intel processor in future to run Quartus software.

Other than this i have no further concern

      thanks
