How to use performance counter for measuring performance in terms of clock ticks for execution of C code with and without custom instruction.

I am using DE2115 board with cyclone IVE device.

please if I get stepwise solution it would be really helpful for me.

I have gone through the AN391 pdf file , but it is given for specific example and with different altera devices.
