I did try reinstalling but the problem still existed. However it has now been resolved. Turns out that the system administrator moved the license file and the software, not finding the file, would automatically start a trial version which does not support devices. It seems an error/warning message was displayed for a very short period and then immediately covered by the main window of the software. I even tried to move the main window to look for the message but it was not there, however it led me to think about the license file and specifying the correct location resolved the problem.
