Dave,

A couple more questions: the 12-bit internal address for CPLD, will this be same for every CPLD? So, the 4-bit Board ID + 12-bit CPLD Address identify a unique CPLD in the system?

I'm thinking of using LVDS drivers. I looked at some ICs and they look super easy to wire up! They use 3.3V and I have that on the system already.

Regarding actual shift registers... the 240Z Max V I'm using is just $5. I think that's reasonable. I just think it's better to have an expandable system and the features I can put in like having a checksum and edge-sync. are very worthwhile as they put in robustness.

One final question, should I have a separate "central" power supply? The boards could tap into the PSU for the required 1.8V and 3.3V.
