Brand new to FPGAs, looking for some direction

I've recently started working with my Altera DE1 board and VHDL while reading the book The Elements of Computing Systems. I've been teaching myself VHDL and the basic usage of the board as I work through some of the projects in the book.

To be honest, the capabilities of this thing are a bit overwhelming and I'm having trouble finding help with some of the basic stuff. I've written and compiled some basic logic functions including a simple ALU and some memory components in VHDL and I've had success programming them to the FPGA.

What I'm looking to do is expand my knowledge and start working with some of the other functions of the board. For example, I'd like to take advantage of built in clocks, the VGA output and the use of a PS/2 keyboard. I realize some of this may be way out of my league, but I've had trouble even finding basic guides. So rather than ask for specifics, I'd just like to know if anyone has any pointers for someone with my lack of experience. Are there guides about the things I'm interested in or am I too new to consider it? I have gone through some of the Altera Training videos, but they seem geared more toward professionals. I am just interested in learning about low-level design and logic. I'd love any advice you could give me.

Thanks. :)
