Altera DE1 8-bit Flash ROM as 16-bits?

Hi. My Altera DE1 board has a model 04 Flash ROM which apparently (according to the datasheet) lets me use it as 16-bits instead of 8-bits. However, when I go to use the Altera DE1 user manual ...

Unfortunately, the board has only implemented an 8-bit interface to the flash, so you're stuck with an 8-bit interface.
