I figured out the Modelsim issue already. I am using Arch Linux and there is an AUR package for the version 20.1 modelsim for this very reason. It works fine with 21.1 Quartus and newer, even if it is ugly (so is Qsys/Platform Designer). Honestly using those tools in a Windows VM wouldn't be much worse than using these old barely readable Java apps that aren't made for 4K screens on Linux anyway. Quartus itself works quite well in Linux for the most part, so that's nice at least. What you say about the Nios Eclipse editor makes the situation quite clear to me. I have used modified Eclipse editors before (TI's CCS editor for the MSP430) and it's not a great experience... so I can only imagine. I'll give it a go to see if I can get it working with Arch, but I won't waste my time if it doesn't look good from the start. For the Coursera course, using the old versions of stuff in a Windows VM definitely seems like the smart choice. Thanks for all your insight! Re: Linux Qsys Now "platform designer", ALT_PLL Altera FPGA IP doesn't save, crash. Thanks for the reply! I'm taking the same Coursera courses now, so that's one reason I ran into the exact same problem as you. I know what you mean, Linux usually gets way less attention than Windows, but honestly I'm super grateful Quartus Prime and the other tools are supported on Linux because I'd rather quit computers and electronics and take up botany than daily drive Windows. I do keep a Windows VM around for the situations where something just won't work otherwise... but honestly my biggest complaint with the Coursera stuff is that classes are so horribly out of date. Quartus Prime 16?... why do they not update these courses? I'm amazed I've been able to get this far with the newer versions of Quartus, There's definitely been some ancient crusty file compatibility issues but that's Coursera's fault. You may be right and I'll run into even more trouble in the later courses, so I'll keep that VM on standby and try to not struggle too much. Thanks for the heads up. Re: Quartus is ignoring my preferred text editor setting for Verilog files Hmmm... That's very strange, now it is working. I removed and added the files back to the project. This is not the first time this happened... I think there is still some kind of bug but at least it is working now. Quartus is ignoring my preferred text editor setting for Verilog files Hi, I'm using Quartus Prime Lite 23.1 on Linux, and I have a custom preferred editor set. It works fine, except for Verilog .v files. It refuses to open them in my editor, reverting to the built-in editor. Every other filetype seems to work, just not Verilog. VHDL doesn't do this. This is extremely frustrating. Is there a way to fix this? Thanks. Re: Linux Qsys Now "platform designer", ALT_PLL Altera FPGA IP doesn't save, crash. I'm on Quartus Prime Lite 23.1 on Linux, and this ALTPLL Altera FPGA IP module (now called ALTPLL Intel FPGA IP) still does not work. Using the hack mentioned here I can get get the wizard to create it, but I cannot configure it. Any time you get to the (3) Output Clocks page, the wizard crashes. The hack seems to keep it from aborting and deleting it, but there's no way to configure the clocks. This is a major bummer... it seems to be unusable. If anyone knows how to get around this so the output clocks can be configured... I'd greatly appreciate it. Re: Why do no options in the "Create / Update" menu work? (Quartus Prime Lite on Linux) Yes, I have looked at it. There aren't a lot of options for desktop users... Ubuntu is really the only choice, and I don't like to use Ubuntu. Quartus Prime Lite seems to run fine on many unsupported distros, but on my distro of choice (Garuda Linux) the "Create / Update" menu and the help files fail. Fortunately the help files are nothing more than an interface to view local web pages in Firefox. I have made another discovery... when the "Create / Update" menu doesn't work, it is entirely something wrong between Quartus and X11... because if you switch to a Wayland session, the problem goes away. It seems to me like some kind of bug or library incompatibilty which could be addressed to make it work across more Linux distros, even if they aren't officially supported. And it's definitely on the X11 desktop side because I was unable to get it to work with Distrobox containers even though the container contained Ubuntu 22.04 LTS which is supported. For now I've got a workaround... when I need to access this menu I can switch to a Wayland session. But permanently switching is not an option for me until they fix the horrendous UI scaling in Wayland (if they ever do). Anyway thank you again for your assistance, it helped me narrow down this weird incompatibility with X11 so I know how to get around it. Re: Why do no options in the "Create / Update" menu work? (Quartus Prime Lite on Linux) Thank you, it does work on Ubuntu 22.04 with the latest version of Quartus Prime Lite. I don't understand why it is broken on every other Linux distro I tried. I realize they weren't officially supported distros but they seemed to work fine except for the options in that menu and also the help files were broken. My main system is not Ubuntu so I'm hoping I can get this to run in a container with Distrobox. Re: Why do no options in the "Create / Update" menu work? (Quartus Prime Lite on Linux) Thank you for the screenshot it is much appreciated. Now I know it actually should be working. I have not tried it on Ubuntu yet. I'll give that a try. Re: Why do no options in the "Create / Update" menu work? (Quartus Prime Lite on Linux) I've done this. The bdf file is selected and open, but the options are still all greyed out except for "Create/Update IPS File..." I feel like these features have just been broken on Linux and no one at Intel has noticed. So how does one make a bsf symbol file from a bdf file without these options? If it has been removed from the Pro version, what is the alternative? Re: Why do no options in the "Create / Update" menu work? (Quartus Prime Lite on Linux) I've tried every combination of selecting that there is, those options never become available. Right now I guess I have to use Quartus Prime Lite 16 running in a Windows 10 VM just to use options in that menu. The options are all available there, you don't have to have anything selected at all, they just operate on the currently viewed file. This makes no sense. How am I supposed to make a bsf file from a bdf file if those menu options don't work?
