Viterbi - Trellis Coded Modulation

I have been trying to understand the TCM section in the Viterbi user guide. Anyone who can help me out?

I have used this core. The TCM is simply a shift register with taps going through an XOR (modulo 2). What the taps are depends on the code used in the Viterbi Decoder.
