Altera was named after the word "Alterable" dropping the "ble". Here's the history:

It's pronounced "All" + "tear" + "Rah" (it means something in an old language.... I forget what though) And since I always hear people back home say Nios wrong it is "Nee" + "OS" (doesn't mean anything, it may have come from a random letter generator for all I know :)) - Altera_Forum
Pronounce it in any way that you'd like, as long as you don't pronounce it "zeye-links"
