Pin1 mark??

I found a sentence from a data sheet as below.

Pin 1 may be indicated by an ID dot, or a special feature, in its proximity on

package surface

It means Pin 1 mark is not a must on the Altera part surface? because I have found some of my Cyclone parts have no Pin 1 mark on the surface. I have tested them and the parts are genuin... Any ideas?

Part numbers are as below.

EP3C40F484C7N,

EP3C40F484C8N

EP2C35F484C6N

EP3C55F484C8N

Can anyone help on this?

    Show a photo! Sounds like your missing something obvious. The F484 packages I see have even two pin 1 marks.

    I heard that Altera actually does re-work on certain parts to sell high end parts to low end parts using customers. In those cases, they re-print the marking and Pin 1 mark could have erased.. Take a look at the pictures~
