A PCI interface can be expected to identify itself, e.g. by a manufacturer and type string to the BIOS/OS. The BIOS will usually display this information on startup. In addition, some diagnostic tools will gather all information exposed by a PCI interface.

Just answering for the windows driver question.

Jungo's windriver is one of the option.

Jungo is the company name and windriver is the product name(not the company name).

Altera's PCIe example driver is using that. It also support old PCI interface as well.
