Monitor program vs NIOS EDS

Hello, I recently read several tutorials, one of them is monitor programming for NIOS II. What I don't understand, is why using this program (or if there is any advantage of using it) instead of us...

    Hello.

    Monitor Program was designed for the University Program supported by Intel. This program supports few development boards.

    The main development tool is Nios II EDS.
