JAM query

Hi,

i was trying to work with jam file through quartus_jli command prompt was able to dump the jam file on board , but while doing auto detect i had to bypass the device in CDF else it was giving ERROR 6 i.e unrecognised device id, whats the significance of it, why we need to do it
