Image processing is done in "Hardware" or "Software"

I am a newbie for FPGA. I have background in C/C++, Matlab ,and i just completed a book "Verilog by Examples". I am wondering about image processing, such as blob analysis, threshold, edge, sob...

Sorry, i've never looked that deep into it. All i can suggest is opencores.org and the University program stuff from Altera; if anything is there that is.
