Why does the SignalTap II Logic Analyzer not allow RAM type to be selected for Stratix V devices?

Description

Due to a limitation in the Quartus® II software version 12.1 SP1 and earlier, the RAM type option in the SignalTap™ II Logic Analyzer is disabled for Stratix® V devices. The RAM type defaults to Auto.

Resolution

If you wish to change the RAM type from Auto to MLAB or M20K, perform the following steps:

1. Copy the file <Quartus II installation directory>/libraries/megafunctions/sld_signaltap.vhd to your project directory.
2. Modify the SLD_RAM_BLOCK_TYPE generic from "AUTO" to "MLAB" or "M20K" as desired.
