Why does the Quartus Prime software version 16.0 fail to install Update 1?

Description

Due to a problem in the way the Quartus® Prime installer was created for version 16.0 Update 1 you may see this error message.

There has been an error. A debug file has been created at:
.......\bitrock_debug.xml

This error may occur if you use WinZip to extract the tar files.

Resolution

To work around this problem either use WinRAR or 7zip to unzip the downloaded file or perform the following steps with WinZip

1. Double click on QuartusSetup-16.0.1.218-windows.tar
2. Go to the WinZip Setting Menu
3. Click on the WinZip Option
4. Select Miscellaneous/Advances tab on the pop-up window
5. Disable TAR file smart CR/LF conversion option
6. Unzip the QuartusSetup-16.0.1.218-windows.exe and dist files
7. The MD5 Checksum should be: e8075002f10c0eeaff2e5d4ae9445bb6 for dist (or 6,450,068KB)
