You may see this error message in the Quartus® II software versions 11.1 SP2 and earlier version if your design VHDL code includes array slices with variable width. This syntax is not supported in the Quartus II software versions 11.1 SP2 and earlier.

Resolution

This syntax is supported beginning with the Quartus II software version 12.0.
