I did exactly as described on Philip Pemberton's Web page (http://philpem.me.uk/elec/fpga/quartus-ubuntu/ (http://philpem.me.uk/elec/fpga/quartus-ubuntu/).
But after the installation of the Quartus base software the setup programs hangs on installing the support for the devices. (it may get through one or two, though). Eventually you have to terminate the setup program. The last few lines In the altera_installer.log looks like this:
Installation of Quartus II Software for Linux Workstations
is complete. You can now run the Quartus II software.
Installing package : Arria GX Family ...
Command : /home/josy/altera/10.0/quartus/bin/quartus_sh --qinstall -qda "/home/josy/Documents/10.0_quartus_linux/altera_installer/bin/../../devices/subscription/arriagx.qda" -show_qt_progress
Discard the -show_qt-progress option and run the command with 'sudo' for every device family you want support for. You can find the appropriate names for the families in the DownloadFolder\10.0_quartus_liinux\devices\subscription or in the ownloadFolder\10.0_quartus_free_liinux\devices folder.
